Why this is a classic:

Vin de Constance is one of the most famous sweet wines ever produced.

Its history dates back to the late 1600s, when vineyards were planted in the cool maritime valley of Constantia near Cape Town. The sweet wines made here quickly became some of the most sought-after bottles in Europe, enjoyed by figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, King Frederick the Great of Prussia, and the royal courts of France and Britain.

The wine became so iconic that it appears repeatedly in 19th-century literature, including the works of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.

Production eventually faded in the late 1800s after phylloxera devastated the vineyards, but in the 1980s the historic estate Klein Constantia revived Vin de Constance, recreating the wine using the same grape variety that made it famous: Muscat de Frontignan (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains).

Today, the wine is made from grapes grown on steep slopes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The maritime climate preserves freshness while allowing the grapes to develop intense natural sweetness.

After fermentation, the wine is aged in a combination of French oak barrels and large foudres, developing extraordinary complexity while retaining the vibrant acidity that keeps the wine balanced and lively.

The result is a wine that is both luxuriously rich and remarkably fresh, widely considered one of the finest sweet wines produced anywhere in the world today.
