Priorat is a small, rugged region with steep slopes in Catalonia. It rose to prominence in the late 1980s, when winemakers began crafting powerful wines from its ancient, steeply terraced vineyards. Today, it holds Spain’s highest quality designation (DOCa), alongside Rioja.
The poor, rocky soils and old vines here result in tiny, concentrated yields, giving the wines depth and intensity. The classic Priorat blend is Grenache (Garnatxa) and Carignan (Carinyena). But Grenache in Priorat expresses itself differently than in warmer regions—it is brighter, more lifted, and more mineral, showing purity rather than roasted fruit.
This wine comes from Porrera, one of the region’s highest-altitude villages, which adds even more freshness and aromatic clarity.
This style—old-vine Grenache and Carignan grown on steep rock—is central to Priorat’s identity. It’s a benchmark expression that shows how Grenache can be both powerful and vibrant, an essential reference point for understanding the region.
